How Thick Should My Carpet Be?

Is Thicker Carpet Better?

The simple answer to this is no but if I just said that, it would not be much of a good read, so I will explain what the better quality is and what the differences are in all of the carpets. The biggest difference in qualities is the part you don't see, the backing. Hessian back carpets are much stronger than felt back carpets this makes them the ideal choice for any areas that get heavy use.

This is because hessian backing is made up of hundreds of individual fibers running the length and the width of the carpet and if you have ever tried to just pull a fiber you will know it is hard to break. Felt back carpet has a softer touch and feel to it making it ideal if you don't want or have underlay but it is a sheet of felt so it can rip and tear much easier than hessian back carpets. But for the part of the carpet you do see there is a multitude of different aspects that define the quality:
  • Density
  • Twist or Loop pile
  • Tightness of twist
  • The yarn that has been used
  • Weight
Density

In it’s most basic form is how much carpet can you get in a selected area of space, this means closer together tufts and how many pieces of yarn are twisted together to make these tufts.  This mostly affects the twist pile carpets so I will give examples for a twist pile carpet. Our tuftex range has a medium density, it has two different yarns twisted together and the tufts are fairly close together.

Comparing to our satisfaction range, this carpet has a high density by placing all the tufts closer together. This carpet still has two different yarns twisted together but these are twisted more tightly to allow more tufts to get closer.

Twist or Loop Pile

Loop pile carpets are incredibly strong compared to twist pile carpets because of their construction, when a twist pile is made it starts as an exaggerated loop pile and then the tops get cut off to make the tufts individual. Loop pile carpets do not go through this cutting process so they have the same pattern as sewing a string in fabric, having that endless string along the length of the carpet is much stronger and harder wearing than individual tufts.

However, having the individual tufts gives a much softer and more comfortable feel to your feet, as they have less restrictions on moving around to make space for your feet, loop pile carpets do not have this benefit.

Tightness of twist

As I mentioned earlier when a carpet is made, strands of yarn are twisted together to make the tufts. To make a strong carpet the yarns can be twisted to different levels but a balance has to be taken into consideration, the more you twist a carpet the more durable it will be, but less comfortable underfoot.

If not twisted enough the carpet will not be as durable, but it will be very soft underfoot
Here I have explained a few of the most important features to look for in a new carpet.

Carpet Tile For Businesses: The pros and cons

Carpet tiles were invented as an alternative to standard broadloom carpet. They are usually used for commercial purposes. They are usually standard in schools, airports, office buildings, and hospitality. There are several things to consider when trying to choose between broadloom carpet or carpet tiles. Keep reading for a list of things you need to know.

Carpet Tile Styles

Carpet tiles come in a wide variety of different colors and styles. They are available in numerous fiber types, many sizes, different pile styles, and manufactured and adhesive types. It means that it is way more likely to find a carpet tile equivalent to the roll of carpet you were considering or would have otherwise used in your home. Carpet is known for having very durable backing. The backing material options include: vinyl, fiberglass, vinyl/fiberglass, woven, urethane,  polypropylene, recycled vinyl, and a few more. More important than the type of backing is the manufacturer’s warranty, which will protect the investment against shrinking, curling, and buckling. When this happens to the tiles, it not only looks bad, but may also lead to a safety hazard because it is open to have someone trip or fall.

Carpet Tile Variety

When choosing carpet tiles for your business, beyond considering the color and style, it is important to remember the big picture. You may be sold by looking at one tile, but envisioning the floor as a whole will help keep the finished floor from looking like a crazy pattern. If you plan on using tiles to create a pattern, envisioning the entire floor will ensure the pattern comes out the way you intended. It is also important to consider the sizes of the tiles, as they are available in multiple options. The tile size will impact the overall look of the finished floor.
Pros of Carpet Tiles

Carpet tiles have several benefits including:

•         Easier installation than standard rolled carpet. Do-it-yourself kits are available. These kits make it simple with instructions, and even measuring the tiles for the installation.

• Easier cleaning and care. The tiles do not require any padding or glue to install them. Individual carpet tiles can be removed for cleaning, and replaced when dry. If one area of the floor becomes damaged, the tile can be replaced without replacing the entire floor.

• Carpet tiles allow for freedom with design, allowing you to give more depth and texture to a room.

Carpet tiles also come with disadvantages, including:

•         The seams of the carpet tiles are more easily seen when compared to wall-to-wall carpet rolls. Without careful installation, the seams could appear uneven.
•         Carpet tiles are less durable to wall-to-wall carpet, meaning they will wear down faster. When used in high traffic areas, they are more likely to come up at the edges.
•         Like their carpet roll counterpart, they are not ideal for areas subject to moisture where mold and mildew may become an issue. The sub-floor needs to be clean and even for the best possible installation result.
•         Carpet tiles are generally more expensive than carpet rolls.
With this information in mind, you will be able to make the best decision for your budget and particular situation.

Choosing Condominium Hallway Carpet.

When designing a commercial space, carpet is the floor treatment most recommended by designers because of the amount of foot traffic they get on any given day. In hallways of co-ops and condominiums, it is very typical to see commercial grade wall-to-wall carpeting used on much of the floors space. Carpeting wall-to-wall makes the area look more expansive. Plus, since sound bounces like crazy on a floor, it's great for soundproofing which residents really appreciate.

Additionally, there is just a "homely" feeling that is unmatched by laminate or tile.

In the past decade, floor covering quality and design have come a long way. In public spaces such as corridors, wall-to-wall carpet is best used where the original floor is not valuable. It is more comfortable than hard surface and it reduces noise levels. When looking for a new commercial carpet, one must keep in mind sound control, design, and budget.

Commercial carpeting can last 15 years or more with proper care. Commercial carpet is made from synthetics or synthetic/natural blend wool fibers. Although natural fiber carpets are more elegant and perhaps appealing for residential applications, they do not always meet commercial standards for stain and flame resistance.

Synthetics can absorb oil and stains quicker than wool blend. However, nylon can easily be cleaned and stays looking newer longer, thus making it a great choice for commercial carpeting. Synthetic fiber carpets are designed specifically to withstand a high level of traffic and are often warrantied for several years.

The range is vast when talking about the cost of floor coverings. Good-quality commercial carpeting can fit right into any building's budget. A low-end, but decent quality commercial carpet can be as little as about $25 per square yard, installed. While more luxurious fibers and custom goods can run as high as $250 per square yard installed.

Best Carpet For Pet Owners

Carpet for Pets
So you want carpet, but you know your precious pet has tendencies to leave accidents in your home from time to time. With the technology that exists today, the comfy feel of carpet that was limited to non-pet owners is a thing of the past! It is 2014 afterall and the carpet technology that exists today will blow your minds. There are many carpet manufacturers that offer pet-friendly carpet.
The one I want to introduce to you today is my new personal favorite: the tried-and-tested Beaulieu Bliss line called Indulgence. It is crazy soft carpet with ultimate family and pet performance. Bliss Indulgence is constructed with the company's incredible patented 100% solution-dyed nylon fiber that is extremely colorfast and stain resistant. Additional features include Beaulieu's own Magic Fresh treatment that reduces common odors such as pet, cooking, and smoking odors. Taking it a step further, Bliss Indulgence has another special ingredient called Silver Release.
Currently, the Indulgence line plans to have 7 styles across 100 sku's. Bliss Indulgence carpets will never permanently stain or fade thanks to Permasoft Solution Dyed Nylon fiber. You can even clean stubborn spots with a 50% bleach and water solution.
This carpet brings several industry-leading features together - some for the first time in a single collection. Beaulieu's Wrinkle Guard Protection is introduced as part of Bliss Indulgence. Wrinkle Guard is a new carpet backing that guarantees lays flat, stays flat performance. The fact that it doesn't pull up, helps tremendously when your larger household pets walk over your carpet. The Bliss Serenity Guarantee is also being introduced as a package of protection with Bliss Indulgence that includes a Lifetime No-Exclusion Stain Removal Warranty, as well as a host of other category-leading warranties.

Here are a few highlights to help you understand this amazing pet-friendly carpet:

1) Solution-dyed nylon means the color is built into the fiber. Take a carrot for example. A carrot doesn't fade or stop being orange because you peeled or cut through it. Same goes for a solution-dyed nylon fiber. It will not fade against the sun and you can even clean it with a diluted bleach mix.

2) Pet urine and other unwanted stains can be cleaned right away with a towel and warm water. To take it a step further, you can use a diluted solution of one part water and one part bleach.

3) Magic Fresh technology with Silver Release will make your carpet odors disappear. This makes it so your pet will not be able to sense where they last left their last mark. It is also the only antimicrobial treatment available in carpet today. It inhibits the growth of odor and stain-causing bacteria, mold and mildew for the life of the carpet.  2a

Understanding Carpet Styles

Carpet comes in three basic styles: cut pile, loop pile and cut & loop pile. Whether you are looking for tough and durable or that lovely plush feeling underfoot, carpet gives you that extra comfort and safety your family deserves. Sit back and let us narrow it down in our quick and informative guide to the style you'll love for years to come!

CUT PILE
The cut pile style is created when the loops in the weave are cut to the same height and are slightly tuft, giving the carpet a dense and soft appearance. Cut pile carpet has the largest share of the residential market and comes in the following four primary subcategories:

Saxony - You probably had it “wall to wall” growing up. Saxony (known as plush) tends to wear much faster than other styles. It’s probably best used in those low foot-traffic rooms — like that formal living room that Mom saved for “special-company". Saxony is probably what comes to mind when someone think's of carpet —thousands of perfectly even, solid colored strands of fiber standing at attention like a freshly cut lawn. This is the carpet that’s soft and thick and shows vacuum lines and footprints .

Textured Saxony - If you don’t need that “freshly mown” look, then Textured is for you. Textured is twisted differently than Saxony and is also steamed to make a permanent curl. This carpet is “trackless” and won’t show footprints because it reduces light reflexibilty. Textured carpet is cool,  casual, and it will show far less wear than the other styles.

Frieze - More of a Knobby texture, this cut pile offers a tighter “twist” than Textured style. The yarn actually curls over, creating a very durable and elegant product that hides vacuum lines and footprints.

Cable - Made with thicker and longer yarns than it's cut pile companions, Cable is comfortable beautiful, and a very luxurious choice. However, it can crush and matte with heavy foot traffic, so we don’t recommend Cable for heavy routes or busy areas of your home.

LOOP PILE
This is how all carpet actually begins — looped and uncut. Often known as commercial carpet, loop pile carpets can either be consistent surface, smooth , or low and high loops giving the carpet a more textured appearance. Loop carpets are usually made from nylon or olefin fibers. Multi-color loop pile comes from combining different colored fibers together which helps hide soiling and traffic patterns. Made from yarns that are looped into the backing, this popular style is perfect for high traffic areas of the home and can be found in many commercial settings.

CUT & LOOP
One of the most interesting and my personal favorite, cut & loop, this combination of cut pile and loop pile provides variation in surface textures. You might hear this carpet also called "cut and uncut", or "sculptured carpet”. This popular style is great at disguising wear, foot traffic, and offers a variety of surface finishes. 2a

Should You Buy New Carpet Or Have Your Old Carpet Cleaned?

There are carpets that are built to last as little as three years and some that can last upwards 30 years. Sooner or later, though, your carpet will have outlived its days and will need to be replaced. Below you'll find a quick guide to help you figure out if your old carpet is still deserving of another professional cleaning or if it is time to buy a new carpet.

1. Is your carpet matted down?

One of the first signs of "carpet death" is when the pile starts to flatten or mat down in the main walkways and stairs. If your carpet is made of PET Polyester or Polyester and is matting down, then your carpet is most likely on its way out the door. Polyester fibers are not very resilient therefore are known for crushing and matting down. The tuft will not ever return to its original upright position once it falls over and lays down. Having your carpet professionally cleaned in this situation will not likely give your carpet any renewed life.

However, if your carpet is made from nylon or sorona, you may be able to remedy the problem with a professional cleaning. Nylon is well known as the most resilient fiber because after being cleaned it has the ability to regain its like-new appearance. Sorona, also known as Smartstrand, PTT, or Triexta can regain some of its like-new appearance after a thorough cleaning and is more resilient than polyester.

2. Do you have a looped Berber carpet?

If you have a looped Berber carpet made from Olefin, and the once upright loops are now laying down flat, then it’s likely that your old carpet has seen better days. Though Olefin is a very durable fiber, it's not very resilient and therefore prone to matting. Olefin is inherently oily by nature and is cheap to manufacture. It is harder to keep clean because it tends to attract dirt easier. Homeowners usually report that stains or oily spots reappear soon after being cleaned. If your Berber carpet is made from Olefin and is matted down, looking dingy, and is more than three years old, spending money on professional cleaning will most likely not yield beneficial results. It is probably a good time to consider replacing your carpet.

Berber styles made from nylon are much more desirable because they are stain resistant, resist matting, and in general have a much longer lifespan. Though, when compared to Olefin, nylon typically runs much higher in costs . You can expect to pay $20-$40 per yard for a good quality nylon Berber carpet. If your Berber carpet is 10 years old or less and is made from nylon, then a professional cleaning can easily rejuvenate your carpet and give you many more years of service.

3. Is your Carpet Permanently Stained?

No carpet is 100% stain-proof even expensive carpets can be ruined by staining. Most carpets sold today have some form of anti-stain treatment either infused or applied. Anti-stain treatments that are topically applied can wear off over time or simply wash off completely. Scotchgard is a well known anti-stain treatment product that is topically applied and can be reapplied as necessary. Most carpet cleaning companies provide this service for a nominal fee. If you do not want to fuss with carpet treatments, Stainmaster works very efficiently. Stainmaster carpets have an anti-stain system that is infused into the fiber and does not wash or wear off.

Professional carpet cleaners can remove most household stains. Unfortunately in some cases there is little hope. Carpet manufacturers have a list of certain types of stains that are not covered under their warranty including mustard, teas, bleaches, acne medications, plant fertilizers, drain cleaners, and plant food- to name a few.

If your carpet has permanent stains or damage caused by feces, vomit, urine, mildew, mold, or other biological substances then your carpet may be a health hazard and should be replaced. Consult with a professional carpet cleaner if you need an expert opinion or advice.

4. Is your Carpet more than 10 years old?

Most carpet and padding sold today are designed to last roughly 10 years. This is considered to be a medium grade or quality level that most homeowners select. Prices range from $20 to $35 per square yard installed with a rebond pad.

If your current carpet is more than 10 years old and you have issues like wrinkles or ripples, fading or color loss, crushing or matting of the pile, or a lack of padding support in halls, main walkways and on stairs, then your carpet and padding may be at the end of its intended lifespan. Keep in mind, spending hundreds having your carpet professionally cleaned won’t make a worn out carpet or padding come back to life.

5. Is Your Padding Worn Out?

When you buy carpet, do not underestimate the importance of buying the correct padding to go under it. Padding should be considered as "the heartbeat" of your carpet. Once it fails to provide enough support, your carpet will start to wear out much faster. When you are ready to buy a new carpet, be sure to choose a good quality padding. The padding should be able to provide sufficient support and have a lifespan equal to the grade of carpet you select. If you find that your existing padding is worn out and your old carpet still looks like new, you might be able to just replace the padding to give your old carpet several more years of added life. This is not a common thing to do and you should ask your professional carpet cleaner if this might be a viable option for you. 1a2a

Top 10 Reasons to Choose Carpet Tile for Commercial Use

  1. Carpet tiles like carpet, provides a warmer more insulated floor than a hard surface.

  2. Carpet tile is acoustically superior due to its dense face construction and four-layer condensed backing system.

  3. The condensed vinyl backing of carpet tile is superior to all other carpet backing systems. It is moisture resistant and does not allow bacteria or spills to penetrate the tile. It is totally bonded to the back of the carpet so it cannot be delaminated by either foot or rolled traffic. This backing system prevents the edges or seams from raveling.

  4. Unlike rolled goods, carpet tiles are easily shipped, stored, and moved around within a facility. Portability is one of its strong features.

  5. Carpet tiles can easily be installed by non-expert installers.

  6. In an occupied interior, the furniture does not have to be moved out. Heavy workstations files, pianos, and pool tables, can be jacked up or slid as the tile is being installed.

  7. Carpet tiles can be easily replaced (if you order a few extra when placing your order) when they become soiled or worn. You can also rate worn or soiled tiles to a less obvious spot within the room to extend the life of your carpet tiles. Also, you can easily remove a soiled tile and clean it at a utility sink and replace it after it has dried.

  8. Although the entire carpet industry recommends chair pads under roll chair casters, carpet tile performs the best without them and can be replaced after excessive use.

  9. Carpet tiles allow for creativity. They can be quarter-turned to create a pattern. You can make a border with a different color pattern. You can rearrange the tiles to give a new feel to the room. Ask about our pre cut borders and area rug tile packages.
  10. A study on different floors like terrazo, vinyl tile & carpet tile found carpet tile is the preferred environmental stressor because of sound reduction & reduced discomfort from reflected glare on the floors. 1a

How Laminate Floors are Made

Laminate Flooring can be made to resemble hardwood, ceramic and stone.  Most Laminate floors consist of four components bonded together:

1) The top layer is a durable wear layer, providing protection and stain resistance.  These layers often contain aluminum oxide, as well as melamine resin that creates durability.

2) A decorative layer also known as aprint film is ad-hered on top of the core board giving the floor its hardwood or tile look.  This is a printed high-definition photo-reproduction of a wood grain, natural stone or ceramic tile pattern.

3) The next layer is a core board, generally made from high-density fiberboard or particle board, which may also contain melamine plastic layer that lends dimensional stability to the planks and also helps guard against moisture from the sub floor.

The Process

Generally, it begins with the assembly of the four layers of raw materials in large sheets.  This typically takes place on a production line, where each layer is stacked on top of each other.

Once the four layers have been stacked, they are ready for pressing.  The stacks are pressed at high temperatures reaching 400 degrees, with up to 600 pounds per square inch of pressure for 20 to 30 seconds.

If the laminate is designed to have a textured surface, the press has specialized plates that imprint the textured pattern onto the sheets, creating more natural looking visual.

After a cooling process, the boards are cut into planks and the moved on to be profiled.  Multiple profiling saws create the tongue and groove edges on the sides of the planks that enable the floor to lock together.  The finished planks then go through a quality inspection and are checked for color, texture, finish, size and correct interlocking capabilities.

At Americarpet we carry products from many of the best and largest laminate companies in America.  We also carry commercial laminate flooring from Alloc , Armstrong and Abet Laminati from Italy.  This laminate flooring comes with a warranty from the manufacturer for commercial use .

Another Thing That Adds Value to Carpet

When it comes to adhesives, exactly how do premium products add value to installations?  What are the specific attributes that make these adhesives better than others?  What functions should they or shouldn't they perform?

Many companies and installers are looking only at price when bidding on a job, they don't understand that, in the long run, a premium adhesive is going to save them money.  Most premium adhesives will spread better, set up better and perform at a higher standard than  the lower quality adhesives.

Different adhesives are designed to work with various products, different types of carpet backing, substrates and problems that surface in regard to the environment.  Top of the line adhesives address specific problems and are true to their names.

When working with patterns and high traffic areas, premium adhesive is a must.  We do not want to have any failures because we used the wrong or cheap adhesive.

What About Carpet

Carpets and rugs have been around us for millennia, an important commodity that bring to us the warmth and softness in our living spaces, and the opportunity to express a personal touch in environmental and visual design.  Today’s homes and working places have choices of floor coverings driven by activity, practicality, maintenance and cost. Given the tendencies to improve the quality of our lives in a world flooded with uncensored information, carpets have acquired in my view, a less than fair overview of their characteristics and features.
Carpets by their own nature are just textiles made of fibers either braided, woven or loomed. We have come a long way in the technology to manufacture these items, and now we enjoy large spaces with beautiful repeated patterns in resilient natural and synthetic fibers as well as exquisite hand-made works of art.

As any other porous material, carpets will get dirty by exposure to their environment but especially by the enduring traffic above them. Now we see the importance of the proper cleaning and maintenance of carpets, and above that, the choice of color and type of carpet. Carpets come in all colors and a myriad of pattern designs to please just about everyone, and in a wide range of qualities to suit the activities at home and the working environments. There are several ways to hold the fibers in place by knots and glues, and synthetic latex without proteins is used in most cases with very good results.

As a rule of thumb, the longer the fiber hairs the softer the carpet would feel, but the shorter the fiber and tighter the weave makes for a stronger and more resilient carpet such as for commercial applications. The same is true for the carpet padding, where density is more important than thickness for walking comfort and carpet durability. Although carpets are not manufactured with harmful chemicals since 1978, an unattended carpet will accumulate any particles and spillage as any article of clothing made with natural or synthetic fibers.

Contrary to popular belief, mold is not a carpet issue but moisture is. Regular vacuuming and spot cleaning according to the carpet manufacturer should be sufficient to upkeep a carpet for the intended use according to its warranty. This means that the product has been made and tested for a “normal environment” with the expected air circulation and relative humidity. Any carpet or textile that is moist or wet will favor the growth of mold, bacteria and pathogens; so avoiding the retention of water or any other liquid within the carpet and padding is key for a healthy environment and the carpet durability. Better quality padding comes into play here since they are waterproof and help with spill accidents or steam cleaning.

Selecting the appropriate color and grade of your carpet and padding should be the first consideration for your comfort and secondly, the installation should be done by professionals who know by experience and practice, and can advise you for the best return on your investment.

Choosing a Floor for your Home or Office

Choosing a floor may face you with too many options for comfort and durability, considering your style and budget. Begin setting a price range and evaluate design, performance features and cost of installation from a few competitive providers.

Explore what calls your attention and consider all style options. Floors have evolved with technology and the industry now offers modern products such as resilient vinyl and laminates that are durable and easy to maintain for years of everyday living, and are affordable.

Whatever floor you choose should complement the style or blend of styles of your home or office, blending the transitions of spaces, and maintaining the features that you want to improve or replace. The basic rules of Living Spaces will always apply; features too large or small in a room give a sense of scale in the design, as lighter colors expand the field of view.

Deep Stained Wood Floors - New Hardwood Flooring Trends

2014 is seeing a shift away from soft colored flooring to far deeper, richer shades of color. The beautiful American Black Walnut and European Oak stained in a deep glossy dark shade, and other hardwood varieties in bright green or red have found reception as innovations for a pricy refined style and elegance. Wooden floors have meant a step up in homes and buildings for centuries, and will continue to claim a status on its own.

Exotic hard woods from the tropics and the Far East make their way into the American market and offer a considerable choice in looks and price, not to mention Bamboo and the reclaimed and seasoned woodwork with all its marks, scratches and stressed look that can also provide a spectacular view.

Why Commercial Carpet is a better Choice for Business

Design Flexibility
Whether you are choosing carpet tile or broadloom, with carpet is easy to find a style that matches.
You can choose from thousands of styles and color to make a work environment that reflects your company’s culture.  In a educational or health related setting we recommend using calming, softer colors to provide a great environment for healing or learning.
Reduces Noise
Offices today have open area where phone conversations and frequent employee interactions are distracting. Carpet helps increase productivity by absorbing sounds. Adding cushion beneath a carpet reduces noise even more. Also, carpet on stairs helps mask the sound of constant foot traffic.
Cushions Slips and Falls
Carpet is great for cushioning our footsteps, reducing slips and falls and minimizing the chance of injury when falls do occur. It is particularly helpful for youngsters at schools or the elderly at facilities like hospitals or nursing homes.
Provides Warmth and Comfort
Carpet provides thermal resistance.  In colder climates or seasons, it retains warm air longer, providing energy conservation benefits. Carpet creates a comfortable work and gives your space a warmer overall feeling.
Certified to Have Low VOCs
Carpet is the lowest VOC emitter of common floor choices, and requires fewer cleaning chemicals than other floor coverings. In addition, carpet improves indoor air quality by trapping allergens and other particles so they can be vacuumed away.
Saves Money Over Time
Carpet will maintain its life and look beautiful for many years  In labor and cleaning supplies/materials, carpet will save you a lot money over the long run.
